celebrating Wagner’s 199th birthday and the 35th anniversary of the Wagner Society of New York
Stockholm-born soprano Nina Stemme has been praised by Opera News as combining an intellectual approach to opera texts with gorgeous, finely colored lyricism. Beginning with Mozart and Puccini roles with the Stockholm Opera Studio, she made her Bayreuth debut in 1994 as Freia in Das Rheingold, and her Met debut as Senta in 2000. A breakout success as Isolde at Glyndebourne, she recorded the role opposite Plácido
Domingo for EMI in 2005, and she has sung the role at Bayreuth and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. She received great acclaim as Brünnhilde (her first complete Ring cycle) with Mark Delavan as Wotan/Wanderer in the San Francisco Ring in 2011. Ms. Stemme will sing the title role of Salome in the May 24th Cleveland Orchestra concert performance at Carnegie Hall. She first sang with Mark Delavan when they starred in Salome in the Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona) in 2009.

Baritone Mark Delavan is known as a singer of vocal power and fierce theatricality. A New Jersey native, he made his first appearance as Wotan/Wanderer in the 2011 San Francisco Opera’s Ring cycles. “A great new Wotan has arrived,” said the San Francisco Examiner. He will perform the roles in two of the 2013 Met Ring cycles. He was praised as Amfortas in the new production of Parsifal for Lyric Opera of Chicago, and earned acclaim
at the Met in his 2001 company debut as Amonasro in Aida. He has also sung the title roles of Simon Boccanegra, Nabucco, Der Fliegende Holländer, Falstaff, and Rigoletto, and has appeared as Scarpia in Tosca, Tomsky in Pique Dame, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, Carlo in La Forza del Destino Iago in Otello, Gérard in Andrea Chenier, and Jochanaan in Salome with Ms. Stemme in 2009, in the Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona).
